Photograph inscribed and signed: To Paul Palmer! Newley, who began his show business career on the stage at the age of 14, first gained notice in films as the Artful Dodger in Oliver Twist (1948).

After making his film debut a year earlier (Dusty Bates, 1947), he would go on to star in a number of films through 1992 (Boris and Natasha), most notably The Cockleshell Heroes (1955), Doctor Doolitle (1967) and The Old Curiosity Shop (1975). Newley was also featured in a long list of made-for-TV movies, and he guest starred on a long list of TV shows from 1956 (Colonel March of Scotland Yard) to 1998 (EastEnders). A talented singer as well as writer, producer and director, Newley had his first hit song, "Idle on Parade" in the late 1950s, and he would go on to chart seven times, including two No.

Newley also co-composed (with Leslie Bricusse) a number of hit songs, including "The Candy Man" and "Goldfinger". Slightly creased at blank margins and corners.
