CHESTER NIMITZ 13x10 image of Admiral Nimitz signing the Japanese surrender document aboard the Battleship Missouri, September 2, 1945 Photograph inscribed and signed: To Elmer Wiles/with best wishes C. Shown aboard the Battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay, September 2, 1945, signing the instrument of Japanese surrender.

Behind the seated Nimitz stand General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, Admiral William F. Halsey, and Rear Admiral Forrest Sherman. There is also a facsimile signature of Nimitz in the picture. At the Battle of Midway (June 3-5, 1942), forces under Nimitz's command turned the tide of the conflict with a brilliant victory against a vastly superior Japanese fleet, a triumph variously styled as "the incredible victory" and the battle that ruined Japan. As Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet (CINCPAC), Nimitz was in overall command of US land, air and naval forces in the Pacific theatre.

(Army General Douglas MacArthur exercised similar control over combined forces in the Southwest Pacific) Nimitz was promoted to the newly created five-star rank, Admiral of the Fleet, in December 1944. On September 2, 1945, he was present at the Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. Toned, soiled and worn around edges. ¼ inch hole at bottom left and right corner of the photograph.

¼ inch hole at top center. See more material from these signers. See more listings in our MILITARY (2,515). Please note that this is an authentically signed item.
