JAY SILVERHEELS Black and white publicity photograph of Jay Silverheels as Tonto, "faithful Indian companion" of the Lone Ranger. Dissatisfied with what he considered the stereotyped performances assigned to "Tonto", he founded the Indian Actors Workshop in Hollywood in the late 1960s with the dual goals of creating more acting opportunities for Native Americans and of improving their screen image.
