Executive "Doc" Salomon Photograph inscribed and signed: To Franklin/In remembrance of/a swell acquaintance and/looking forward to next/summer when I'll be/seeing you again. Sepia, 10¼x13¼, affixed to 15x20 card stock.
His movie wish came true, when as a naval aviator in World War II he won four Distinguished Service Crosses for his combat heroics in the Pacific. He took to the air again in the 1949 film Task Force, and was then featured in the anti-war film set in World War I, Paths of Glory (1957). Morris' film career never really recovered from his screen absence during the war, and the man who had dodged Japanese bullets died of a heart attack at age 45. Although not inscribed to A. "Doc" Salomon, this photo was part of his collection.
Salomon, a friend of studio mogul Jack Warner who rose to head the London branch of Warner Bros. Studios, compiled an extensive collection of celebrity autographs during his nearly 30 years with the studio. A V-1 rocket demolished his London studio in July 1944 and killed Salomon, but his photo collection miraculously survived.
