Signed in blue ink in 1978, seven years after Cugat retired. Photograph inscribed and signed: " To Linda/Renaldo/Cugat/1978 " in blue ink. Cugat is pictured (on left) with Lina Romay and Miguelito Valdez in a still from the 1942 film, You Were Never Lovelier.

The second and last of the Fred Astaire-Rita Hayworth films, this film featured novelty numbers by Cugat (Valdez was billed as a "Band Singer" and Romay is credited as a "Singer"). That year, Cugat also appeared in This Time For Keeps, and he would lend his talents to Stage Door Canteen in 1943. Cugat had official retired in 1971, seven years before signing this photograph, after suffering a stroke.

Born Francisco de Asis Javier Cugat Mingall de Bel y Deulogeo in Spain, Cugat grew up in Havana, and the teenaged violin prodigy toured with Enrico Caruso before coming to the U. Cugat worked as a cartoonist for the Los Angeles Times while organizing his first bands, and by 1928, he and his band were playing at the Cocoanut Grove in Hollywood.

Cugat appeared in a number of feature films, usually as himself. His wives included singer Abbe Lane (1952 until their divorce in 1963) and entertainer Charo (1966 until their divorce in 1978). Minor surface creases (most not evident head on). Lightly soiled at lower right blank corner, pinhead-size stain at upper blank margin. File nicks at lower blank edge. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso (light impressions, not evident head on, at upper background).
